The new RSX50 electric actuator – maximum force, precision and durability from Tolomatic
The industrial automation market is increasingly shifting away from hydraulic solutions in favor of modern electric drives. The new RSX50 electric actuator – the largest model in the RSX series with a maximum force equivalent to approximately 50 tons – addresses the growing demands for efficiency, precision, and reliability.
Hydraulic-class force – up to 50 tons
The RSX50 was designed as a fully-fledged alternative to hydraulic actuators. Offering a maximum pressing force of up to 445 kN, it is ideal for applications such as:
- industrial presses
- forming and stamping
- press-fit assembly
- handling/moving very large and heavy components
- operations requiring high axial forces
Importantly, the actuator can operate in 100% duty cycle mode, ensuring full readiness for continuous operation without compromising durability.
Precision and repeatability thanks to a planetary roller screw
The heart of the RSX50 is a precision planetary roller screw, which provides:
- very high positioning accuracy (up to +/- 0.023 mm/300 mm)
- minimal backlash
- exceptionally long service life
A ball screw option is also available for less demanding applications, but it is the roller screw technology that provides the best performance and resistance to dynamic loads.
Durability and long service life – up to millions of cycles
One of the key features of the RSX50 is its durability. The design has been optimized for use in demanding applications – the actuator can achieve up to 6 million cycles at full load.
Reliability is enhanced by:
- 4 ball bearings designed for high loads and axial forces
- The piston rod surface is thermochemically treated (salt nitriding), which increases surface hardness, resistance to wear and corrosion, and prevents contaminant adhesion
- A sealing system protects the cylinder interior from contaminant ingress
- The seal cartridge can be replaced in the field
Compact design, enormous power
Despite its considerable power, the RSX50 is distinguished by its compact design. The square aluminum body (235 mm side) ensures an optimal strength-to-weight ratio and facilitates integration into existing machinery systems.
Additionally:
- Various mounting options are available (flange, feet, mounting plates).
- Motor orientation can be adjusted (mounted in-line or parallel to the actuator).
- The “Your Motor Here” system enables integration with virtually any servo motor available on the market.
Performance and Energy Efficiency
Using an electric drive instead of hydraulics means:
- No hydraulic fluid leaks and lower maintenance costs.
- Higher energy efficiency.
- Precise motion and force control.
- Easy integration with control systems (PLC, servo drives).
An additional performance-enhancing option is the Oil Cooled version, in which parts of the actuator operate in an oil bath instead of grease. This significantly reduces temperature, friction, and wear, allowing for up to double the work capacity in demanding applications while maintaining the same actuator operating parameters.
Flexible Configurations
The RSX50 offers a wide range of configurations:
- gear ratios (e.g., 4:1 and 6:1)
- various screw pitches
- various piston position sensor options
- IP67 protection
- food grade version
This allows the actuator to be precisely tailored to specific applications – from heavy industry to demanding production environments.
